How CrossFit changed my life

Let me tell you a story about how CrossFit changed my life and how it is changing the life of many others.

I used to work 50-70 hours a week in an office and travelled through entire Europe on meetings. I tried to be active by going to the gym, running some half-marathons, riding my bike and not to eat too much bad stuff.

Still something was making me feel unfitter for every day even though I was spending all that time running and training. Now I realize I was just completely wasting my time back then and I hope this writing can help some people not to waste their time like I did.

Back in 2013 I decided to move to a new office and there I met a guy who was former CMO and founder of a company and had put many dog years into making the company grow in Europe and Asia. He was completely burned out and sold his shares and wanted to open a CrossFit box in Berlin. I was curious of what that was and when he found his location I was participating in a first workout where we did not have any equipment at all.

I was used to physical activity and fitness I thought and as a former ice hockey player I like to train with intensity and hard. But this workout just crushed me and I was humbled. I was not fit at all I realized. At that moment I had a couple of major projects that caused me high levels of stress making me almost paralyzed and I had so great stomach aches I could not even drive a car. And yes, I just had become a father of a lovely daughter and I was not sleeping much and wanted to be the best father I could. The only thing that made my body not to explode was by training.

I started to train a couple of times a week and felt how I felt better for every day, week and month and I just wanted to train more. My stress levels and sleep got better and I started to be more proactive and full with energy. Over time I also got into more of the factors behind health and fitness. As my interest started to grow I also realized the vast gap in knowledge between “normal” people and us (people within the health industry).

So I started conversations about health and fitness with anyone I knew and talked to many of my neighbors that just happens to be medical doctors of all sort and I was now even more flabbergasted by how big the distance was between the proactive health business and the medical treatment industry. The medical doctors are the guys I trust when something is acute and needs ambulante treatment, but at the same time the docs are terrible at treating people from chronical diseases.

They mostly don’t even know why people end up at the hospital to do a hip replacement, start their diabetes cure, radiology etc. They are there to save us from drowning but they can’t learn us to swim.

I felt a huge urge to help people close to me and almost anyone I got to know. Fortunately I met this great dude Gerardo who also was into CrossFit, and we spent months talking about the effect it had on us and others. After months and months of talking our wives got annoyed with us only talking and made us to sign up for CrossFit and open up our own box. This was one of the best decisions ever made until this date.

Now here I am more than 7 months into this endeavor and I already see so much change in the members that we have it makes me proud. The training and teaching has taught me a lot about myself and I am constantly humbled to meet all these guys doing the best with what they have. I challenge myself everyday to make this hour the best hour of every person that comes in here because I know if I do, they will be more successful and stay healthy and grow healthy families of their own. And that is to me just…big.
